Make them part of DIY projects
There are a lot of things that need to be done before a wedding, like sending out invites, hand-writing guests’ place cards, assembling welcome baskets etc. This allows you to cross things from your to-do list as well as makes the children feel more involved. All children like arts and crafts. Allow them to express their creativity at this time. If they come up with an interesting way of putting together things then encourage and appreciate them.
Invite them for cake testing
All kids love cakes and chocolates and you will make their day if you invite them for cake testing. This will show that you care for and value their opinion regarding important matters like the cake. Also, at the wedding every time someone appreciates the cake, the kid will have a chance to point out that they helped in picking it out. If you do not agree with their choices, then you can always go for the one you like and ask the baker to add another small cake which the child liked.
Have them as your flower girl or ring bearer
Little children will feel extremely valued if they are asked to be flower girls or ring bearers. A flower girl is a very important part of the bride’s entourage. She is as important as the bridesmaids, if not more. Their presence is not just about wearing beautiful flower girl’s dresses and looking adorable, but they will have a few responsibilities as well. Also, the little girl will feel like she is on “team bride” if she is dressed in the same color theme as bridesmaids or even if she leads the bride into the ceremony by throwing petals on the floor. The same goes for the ring bearer. The little boy will feel all grown up and part of your celebrations if he is up there on the altar with the groom and the rest of his entourage.
It is not a hard and fast rule that you have to walk with your dad or your parents to the altar. You can also ask a kid you are close to, to be with you as you take steps into the married life. They will look very adorable walking with you in their wedding dresses for kids. This idea will work if the kids are slightly older, say from seven to eight years of age till about 16 or 17. Just make sure you do not have to carry the child in your lap at this time.
Ask them to be your bridesmaids or groomsmen
It doesn’t say anywhere that your bridesmaids and groomsmen have to be adults. If there is a kid you are close to, then you can invite them to be a part of your wedding party. Kids older than 10 years of age are an ideal fit for this. But if they are younger, they can wear beautiful children’s wedding dresses and stand with you as junior bridesmaids and groomsmen. This allows them to be a part of your pre-wedding ceremonies like bridal showers amongst other things.
